  • CORPORATE TRAVEL DEMAND
    MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTATION

    UrbanTrans provided in-house expertise to strengthen the capabilities of the Optus transport team in delivering its travel demand management program. With over 6,500 employees based at its Macquarie Park headquarters, Optus has a big job to do to maintain its drive-alone rate of less than 40% in an area that averages 75% single occupant car trips. UrbanTrans provided a range of services from strategic demand management analysis through to implementing practical on-ground projects, including commute travel time impacts for staff relocations, recommendations on end of trip facilities and local area wayfinding.

    Ensuring hospital employees have convenient commute options enables staff to spend more time focused on patients and less time stressed about transport. This project developed and then supported the implementation of a hospital travel plan that delivered clear actions to make it easier for employees to get to and from work. Recent work included training staff to deliver personalised journey planning for hospital employees and mentoring staff to travel more efficiently.

    UrbanTrans provided strategic planning advice and mentoring to Knox City Council officers on the integration of several active travel programs under a travel planning methodology to facilitate increases in walking, cycling and scooting to school. The project started with a travel planning workshop for council officers. UrbanTrans then led the development of travel plans for two schools and oversaw council’s development of the next school’s travel plan. Work included design and delivery of student school travel surveys; local area infrastructure and traffic management audits and travel plan recommendations to the school and council.

  • New Lynn Personalised
    Journey Plans

    Client: Auckland Transport

    UrbanTrans has developed a personalised journey planning approach to engage workers and visitors to New Lynn Mall and provide them with customised information on sustainable options for their travel to this suburban activity centre. Participants receive a pack with specific information on their journey and a simple action plan. A follow up phone call by our journey planners provides further information and encouragement about travelling sustainably in the area. Another call a couple of months later records what changes have been made.

    Trying to influence travel behaviours within one large company has its challenges so how do you enhance transport access and sustainability across a suburban business park with 13,000 employees in some 1,200 small businesses? The project UrbanTrans delivered found ways to engage small companies and make travel planning relevant to their business. It focused on company-specific strategies plus area-wide collaboration, which included development, promotion and incentives for a carpooling program for the entire business park.

    How can you shift travel behaviour for shopping trips to large suburban shopping centres? How do you integrate planning for sustainable travel within suburban activity centres? This project brought together the major travel demand generators of the Knox Activity Centre, with a focus across all trip purposes in the area, including workers, students, and shoppers. Working with Knox City Council, AMP Capital, and the Department of Transport, UrbanTrans developed an integrated travel plan for the shopping centre, council offices and Swinburne University TAFE.

    Ensuring hospital employees have convenient, multimodal commute options enables staff to spend more time focused on patients and less time stressed about transport. This collaboration with Sydney hospitals – first with Manly and Mona and now Liverpool hospital – has developed staff travel plans identifying clear actions to make it easier for employees to get to and from work. Recent work includes training staff in developing a travel plan and how to run site audits and staff surveys as the first steps in the plan.

    Hospital Travel Plan

    Efficient transport access is important to delivering high quality health care services. That was the vision behind this project that brought together hospital staff, patient groups, local traffic engineers, and regional bus operators to develop a sustainable transport strategy for patients, visitors and staff of Auckland City Hospital and the Greenlane Clinical Centre. Planning tasks included in-depth surveys of hospital staff, patients and visitors; multimodal access reviews, site audits conducted with patients and staff, and assessments of communications channels and messages.
